Notion AI: what exactly is it?
Notion AI is an AI layer integrated directly into Notion, the all-in-one productivity tool. Available as an add-on at $10/month, it promises to write, summarize, translate and analyze your documents directly within your workspace.
After 2 months of intensive use on real projects, here's our verdict.
What Notion AI actually does well
Document summarization: this is its strongest feature. Pasting a long document and requesting a structured summary works very well. Real time savings for meeting note-taking.
Database filling: Notion AI can analyze your pages and automatically fill database properties. Useful for categorizing content in bulk.
Assisted writing: text continuation suggestions are decent but not exceptional — we've seen better from Claude or ChatGPT.
Q&A on your notes: asking questions about your Notion knowledge base works well for simple questions. Less reliable on complex analyses.
The limits we didn't expect
Context is limited: Notion AI doesn't read your entire workspace — it works on the open page or pages you explicitly give it. Disappointing for a "knowledge management" tool.
Writing quality is average: compared to Claude or GPT-4o, generated texts are correct but lack naturalness. For serious writing, we prefer copy-pasting into a proper LLM.
The price is steep: $10/month on top of your Notion subscription ($8-20/month). For that price, you have access to Claude or ChatGPT which do better.
Who should get it?
Notion AI is useful if:
- You already have a large Notion workspace with lots of notes
- You're looking to summarize and organize rather than create
- You don't want to juggle multiple tools
- You want a powerful writing assistant (get Claude)
- You have a limited budget (free alternatives do better)
Our verdict
6.5/10 — Notion AI is a convenient add-on if you're already Notion-dependent, but not a reason to choose Notion. For writing and analysis, standalone LLMs remain clearly superior.
